Motion Activated Sprinkler

Well, as much as I hate to admit it, we are coming up to the midway point of summer. That means that our cottage gardens are starting to come into their own, the bush beans will soon be ready to eat, and it won’t be too long before some of the other produce is ready too.

Of course that means that the local wildlife will soon be paying your vegetable garden a visit to check on this year’s crop. I’ve have a deer walk through my garden twice this summer. I figure he’s checking out what I have planted and will be back when it’s edible.

As you know, a deer or two can quickly eat you out of house and home if you have a small vegetable garden at the camp. They love fresh produce and are not very discriminating about where they walk or what plants and vegetable they eat.

Of course it’s not just deer, dogs and cats can be a nuisance in your yard, as can skunks, raccoons and other smaller animals. Birds can also be a problem.

Motion Activated Sprinkler

There are numerous methods to keep animals out of your garden. Most of them work sometimes, but many only work in the short term. I am talking about hanging aluminum pie plates that make a noise when the wind blows or small cheesecloth bags of human hair hung around the perimeter of the yard or garden. The pie plates only work if the wind blows and human hair loses it’s effectiveness rather quickly when exposed to the outdoors. Plus it’s kind of strange to have bags of human hair hanging in your garden.

So…if you want to protect your vegetable garden, lawn or yard, perhaps placing a couple scarecrows in the garden might be the answer. But not just any old scarecrow. Nope, you want to use a motion activated sprinkler scarecrow like this one from Contech.

When the motion activated sprinkler ScareCrow detects an animal it instantly releases a short but startling burst of water. The sudden spray of water and the movement and noise of the sprinkler scares animals away.

It won’t be long before animals associate your garden with a scary experience, or at least a wet experience, and they will remove your garden from their list of food sources.

The Contech Motion Activated Scarecrow is easy to set up. Just install a standard 9-volt battery, connect the motion activated sprinkler to your hose, push the 17-inch stake into ground to secure the unit, and set the adjustable sprinkler arc to cover the area you want protected. You can set up more than one if you have a large garden or yard to protect.

If you find that the animals get used to it and begin to ignore it, move it to a new place where they are not expecting it. The surprise works wonders.

Or, you can stay up all night and watch your garden, but that gets old quick….
