The Homeward Stretch

Even though today’s weather forecast is a prediction of snow and it is a grey and cold day the calendar holds much more promise.

Yup, it’s the first day of March. We’ve turned a corner on a winter that was as long as the one before it and the one before that and so on…and now a cottager’s thoughts turn to important things, like predicting when the ice will go out of their cottage lake, hooking up the water pump, opening the camp for the upcoming cottage season.

While cottage life has changed somewhat thanks in part to global warming, making our little places in the woods more accessible all year round, there is no replacing the happy feeling that comes with Spring.

Putting boats in the water, hooking up the water pump, removing the shutters from the windows and listening to the songbirds singing in the trees behind the camp beats watching snow pile up in the driveway.

There is no smell as pleasant as the smell of a two stroke outboard motor warming up as you push off from shore on the first fishing trip of Spring, it’s as addictive as the smell of a cigarette to a smoker.

It’s a nice feeling knowing that it is only a matter of weeks now before the ice will leave, maybe even days in some areas, that the daylight hours will be longer and that boats will soon ply the waters in front of the camp instead of four wheelers and snowmobiles.

We are in the homeward stretch now, take heart cottagers, our time is almost here !!!

  1. Ditto, bring on the spring thaw. Larry and I can’t wait to sit before the bonfires in summer attire and pop in hand.
