Stop Internet Censorship

Considering how Americans love to talk about “freedom” I am often amazed at what goes on in the good old United States of America. For instance right now, their are bills coming before the U.S. Senate that, if passed, will in all probability change the way you use the internet, and perhaps cripple the free speech that the internet provides.

If you are a web surfer, you may have noticed that some websites are blacked out today, and some are sporting a niftly little banner in the upper right corner, such as the one in the upper right corner of The Cottage Chronicles.

That is because blogs and websites are protesting the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). Among internet writers there is a genuine fear that these acts will severely cripple, curtail and likely end the freedom of speech and publication that is synonomous with a free and open internet that spans the globe.

It’s important to mention that even though this is a proposed American legislation, it will impact your use of the internet, regardless of where you live.

On the surface this proposed legislaton may look innoculous enough, but in reality they could very well have huge impacts on the internet and your use of it. Imagine not being able to read whatever you want to read, or having to pay for everything on the internet. Imagine if what is on the internet is controlled by “big brother” or the government, much like television and other media currently. Imagine if control of what you can read on the internet is given to big media corporations?

Yup…this is the way things are headed. That is why January 18th we are protesting this proposed legislation and why you, as an internet reader need to know about it.

Thank-you
