Whew…..it’s friggin’ hot !! “How hot is is Rob”? you ask, and I will answer, it’s so hot the hens are laying eggs that are already fried, and the dandelion greens are ready to eat as soon as we pick them, no cooking required. I am subconciously humming the tune and singing the words to The Lovin’ Spoonful band’s song, “Summer In the City” like this:
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head….That’s pretty much as far as I get with it before I start the verse again and again and….again…..
That song, with it’s car horn sounds, one of which was apparently a Volkswagon Beetle, was written by Mark Sebastian and Steve Boone. It came from the album, Hums of the Lovin’ Spoonful. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1966.
Here it is the hottest day of the summer thus far, and where are we? At home in the city of course watching the asphalt melt and the paint blister off the car. Naturally we wouldn’t be at the camp today, oooh noooo….we have to be home. That’s usually the way of it with cottages, the weather doesn’t usually get really, really nice until Sunday night as you are packing the car to go home. Ever notice that? I think that pound for pound, the lake is always the calmest and most inviting just as you throw the last suitcase in the trunk and lock the door to the camp.
However, it’s still great weather no matter if you are at the camp or at your desk in the city, and after the wet spring and loooong winter we’ve just come through, I will take some hot summer in the city weather and enjoy it with a big grin all day long.
Let’s take a few minutes shall we and travel back to 1966, The Lovin’Spoonful and Summer…In The City !!!
