Someone sent me this picture because it was kind of cottage related..the sender said it was a ‘lesson in self control’ and I suppose that is so very true….It looks to me like a dog who may have already had a few encounters of the skunk kind, and has realized that sometimes the best defense is no offense….anyway, I thought it was cute, so I thought you might get a kick out of it!
If that was my dog, and I looked out the window and saw what was going on…well…I’d be off to the grocery store for some tomato juice, but I have since learned that tomato juice no longer works as well as it used to for cleaning a smelly dog….the accepted way of how to get skunk smell off dog these days is to mix together one 500ml bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup of Baking Soda and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent or pet shampoo.
Take the above ingredients, mix them together and put it in a spray bottle and spray the liquid all over the dog. Be careful not to shake it up in the closed spray bottle. Have a bucket of clean water available for rinsing Fido’s eyes and face if you get any of the spray in his eyes…which means…don’t spray in his eyes…
After you have Bowser well sprayed down in the peroxide, dish detergent, baking soda concoction, rub it into his fur, and allow it to work for about 5 minutes. Try and keep your doggie still and don’t let him lick the stuff if possible.
After about five minutes, spray Rover down again with the peroxide, baking soda, dish detergent combo, rubbing it into his fur again, don’t rinse in between rubdowns. Let it work for a little while again, then rinse him down well with clear water, taking care to get all of the soapy mixture off of his fur.
I’m sure he will be happy with all the attention….Dogs love a bath….Ha!
I suggest letting him dry outside, and then if he still has a lingering skunk odor, do it again….remind yourself frequently that you love your dog….you love your dog….
Oh yes, I’m told this will work for cottage husbands too….
