The Conclusion Of The Cottage Insurance Debacle

Well, I am happy, or perhaps resigned to say that I have finally resolved the cottage insurance issues that I was experiencing. My cottage is finally insured today. I ended up going with my current insurance company, Allstate, who ultimately had the best price, but moreso, they seemed to cause less hassle. Not hassle free mind you, I still had to get the wood stove certified, and provide a written statement that the place was accessible year round. After a bunch of fruitless phone calls, scary price quotes, and companies wanting all my insurance policies switched to them before they would consider the cottage, well…they just wore me down. When the last quote topped about $900 for fire insurance, more than my home insurance policy, I gave up.

In the end, I have some fire insurance, not as much as I would have liked, but some, and my liability insurance from my home policy is extended to cover me at the cottage. It ended up costing about $225.00

The experience has taught me what I already knew, purchasing cottage insurance is not as easy as one might think. On the other hand, if you are willing to pay…well….The problem seems to lie with the idea that a cottage is not lived in year round, therefore you are not there to protect it. Which…in a sort of a way, was why I thought we bought insurance in the first place.

I’m not sure what the story would be for cottages on islands or other boat accessible only locations like up to the head of our cottage lake. I suspect it’s pretty difficult to get insurance somewhere like that. They want you to be somewhere near a fire department, and as I said, accessible year round. Fortunately, our cottage lane is plowed almost to my cottage most of the winter by a neighbor, who goes there more often than the rest of us.

Cottage ownership is not without it’s share of expense, that is for sure. But ultimately, I think it’s worth it….
